Val
di Magra: from the source to the sea
|
|
| |
La
Val di Magra (The Magra Valley) offers a number of resources
to those interested in travelling, learning, having fun, or just
in having a relaxing weekend. Here you can freely decide day by
day between the sea, the mountains, the river and the lake. Starting
from affordable prices there is a host of good services, from
hotels to houses to rent, from restaurants to farm holidays.

|
For
those who love culture, Val di Magra has a thousand-year-long
history narrated by museums, exhibitions and, above all, by castles,
churches and ancient villages. On the other hand, if one is seeking
for uncontaminated nature, the "Valle" is again a great
place, with forests and rivers.
|
|
| |
Walking
down one of the dozens of hikes cut through the woods, or up on
the mountains, one can spend a beautiful day in the Valle. You
shouldn't be surprised to find at the end of the path some nice
old village the with its welcoming "trattorie". Sport
lovers, especially water sport lovers, can take their pick: they
can go to the sandy beaches of Fiumaretta, or rent a boat to explore
the rocky coast of Ligury for a holiday out of the ordinary. The
hinterland is rich in sport facilities of any kind.

The
region is of great interest for antique lovers too: Sarzana's
summer exhibitions are among the most renowned in Italy, and many
permanent antique dealers and shops are scattered all over the
region. If you're looking for relaxation and body care you may
be interested in Equi's thermal spa, or you could visit Montelugo
di Pontremoli, mountain village renown for its waters.
|
|
| |
The
great variety of this region is reflected in the number of traditional
dishes, of feasts and gastronomic exhibitions. Around Sarzana
one can taste many of Ligury's specialities: the "pesto",
the "farinata di ceci" (batter made of chickpea flour),
the "torta di riso" (rice pie), the "torta di farro"
(spelt pie), excellent olive oil. Pontremoli and the surrounding
towns are more Tuscan in their specialities: they have excellent
"pecorino" (salty cheese), mushrooms and Pontremoli's
typical "amor". Finally, the amount of wine produced
each year is limited, but its quality is excellent.

Wine
experts shouldn't miss the cellars on Luni's hills, where one
can taste the famous Vermentino D.O.C; also, a large wine exhibition
(the "Rassegna dei Vini dei Colli di Luni") takes place
every summer in Sarzana. Vezzano, on the other hand, hosts the
"Festa dell'Uva" (Grape Feast) in September. During
the grape harvest season, the region also organises "BancarelVino",
popular wine exhibition.
